Profiles

Toru Kaku
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture. Completed the master’s program at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School at the top of his class. Recipient of the Graduate School Acanthus Prize. Completed the Nikikai Opera Studio as valedictorian. Recipient of the Grand Prize and the Shizuko Kawasaki Prize. With a wide repertoire from Baroque to contemporary music, he is especially acclaimed as a frequent soloist with Bach Collegium Japan. In 2023, his contemporary performances in the Opera City Foundation recital series B→C were also well received. On the opera stage he has taken diverse roles including the title role in Don Giovanni at Nissay Theatre and Dr. Schön in Nikikai’s Lulu. As a solo CD artist he released his fourth album A Time for Us in 2023.
Frequent media appearances including TV Asahi’s Untitled Concert. Part-time lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.

Toshiki Tsumuraya
Born in Furudono, Fukushima Prefecture. Harpsichordist and conductor. Founded the early-music orchestra Promusica Baroque Academy in December 2020 and serves as continuo player and conductor. From fiscal 2024, presenting complete performances of J.S. Bach’s cantatas. Graduated from both the Vocal Music Department and the Early Music harpsichord major in the Instrumental Music Department at Tokyo University of the Arts. Recipient of the Kinoshita Prize (Collaboration) at the 88th Japan Music Competition. Studied voice with Kanichi Suzuki, Gerd Türk, and Yukari Nonoshita; harpsichord with Naoya Otsuka; piano and fortepiano with Kikuko Ogura.
